Dr. Shyers has over 39 years of practical experience as a counselor. The first 10 years were invested as a pastoral counselor while the last 29 years have been in private practice. He has lobbied for professional and consumer interests in Tallahassee and Washington, DC.

His efforts as a mental health consumer advocate earned him an 8 year appointment to the Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling by Governors Martinez and Chiles. While on the Board he served 6 years as Chairman and 8 years as government laison officer. Upon retiring from the Board he was appointed to serve on one of the State of Florida's Probable Cause Panels that hear cases of possible statutory violations.

Dr. Shyers has served on numerous state and national professional committees. Dr. Shyers has received more than a dozen awards for his professional and consumer advocacy.

For these reasons, among others, mental health professional, attorneys, and legislators eagerly seek Dr. Shyers' advice on a variety of issues. He is especially appreciated for his knowledge of statutes that regulate all of the mental health professions.
